Perhaps the high harmony requirement prevented them from finding a player who fit better musically... one of the many what if's...

Brent was a Huge part of their vocal blend so I bet they were freaking out about how to not lose power on the vocal end... not sure if it was worth the compromise with Vince though...

I have to agree about the vocal part. With Keith and Donna along her "contributions" gone, I'm sure Jerry was looking to kill two birds, or at least one cat mangler, with one stone by finding a keyboard player who could harmonize. And if you need further proof, just check out a tune or two from Steve Kimock's Crazy Engine to see just how bad Mel is. Sorry, he is a Master of the Keys, but absolutely nothing positive about what comes out of his mouth.
